Critical Thinking Criticised

The two faces of reason

"Reason is an idea that always works but we never use it. Logic is an idea we always use but it never works"

"If you want to know yourself you must learn to think for yourself"

Human society lives in the turmoil that exists between the two faces of reason

Creative Reasoning Thinking.

Creative Reasoning thinking is using reason to think. Discovered by Socrates in 5B.C. it is a method of thinking that discovers the meaning of words and is not to be confused with Critical thinking, which ascribes the meaning of words (see below on critical thinking).

Socrates realized what many people today fail to recognize. The nature of language has its origins in the nature of reality because the only legitimate purpose of language is to describe the nature of reality(the unknown).

Socrates began his description of language with a definition of reason. Reasons are ideas that work. And a description of the unknown. The unknown is reason and I am a reasoning mind that discovers reasons(ideas that work) in the unknown. Socrates had explained the reasoned connection between reality and language. The reasoned idea that enabled civilizations to happen, men to be educated and create a language with the potential to explain reality.

Socrates' statement for the reasoned identity of words in language.
The unknown is ideas that work. Reasons are ideas that work. Words are reasons. Therefore words are ideas that work.
Socrates' statements for the non contradiction of words in language. A word is an idea that works. It can't be an idea that works and an idea that doesn't work.

Socrates' statement for the excluded middle ground of words.
It can't be anything other than an idea that works or an idea that doesn't work. There is no meaning in between.

These statements govern the meanings of words and describe the reasoned connection between words and reality.

Reasoning is "discovering" the ideas that work. Reasoning happens by asking as many reasoned questions as possible that surround the problem in order to eliminate those ideas that don't work and discover ideas that do work. Reasoning is also enabled by Socrates' idea on "the places of reason".

Reasons exist throughout the whole structure of reality in clusters, or families of reasons. The "places" of Socrates. I call them "harmonics" of reason. These harmonics of reason enable us to locate reasoned ideas in reality. Words are harmonics of reason. They are the structure of reality we are seeking to describe.

Critical Thinking.

Critical thinking is ways of thinking with their origins in the opinions of academics and leaders. Meanings of words are ascribed using their opinions on what the word should mean.

Critical thinking dismisses reason as a method of describing how words come to have meaning. Thinking, as in ascribing meaning, can't be used together with reasoned thinking. It is a choice between one or the other.

Critical thinking uses many different ways to arrive at the meanings of word such as comparison, analogy, inference, the unreasoned ideas of axioms of language, a priori and logic.

Critical thinking claims to use logic instead of reason. Logic is the ascribed idea of using reason as laws, ultimate truths, and axioms of language. It's an idea they use but it never works. Their laws of logic are unreasoned ideas. They are unfinished statements that say nothing. They only work when they are made back into reasoned sentences which harmonize with Socrates' ideas on reason.

Summary and comparison of reasoning thinking and critical thinking.

Critical thinking ascribes the meanings of words using the opinions of leaders and academics. It assumes the unknown is a place of chaos and disorder and the only way of explaining it, is to give meanings to words which are then use to describe it. Reasoning thinking uses "reasoned" reasons to "discover" the reasoned ideas that are the unknown. It assumes the unknown is a place of reasoned order because of the huge amount of evidence available which demonstrate that it is a place of reason and order.

The presence of this reason and order is what makes reason workable. The lack of evidence for the ability of opinion to explain the unknown doesn't mean it's unusable because it's used all the time. What it means is, it's unworkable because it doesn't work any time.

Critical thinking ascribes meanings to words founded on opinion and then uses those words to try and "paint" a picture of reality. Reasoning Thinking "discovers" the meanings of words which represent the nature of reality. It then works with those ideas to put reasoned ideas in "their place in reality".

These ideas support Socrates' statements for the reasoned identity of words in language.
